As reported in Green Biz, the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) were developed by a partnership of international organizations to propose “eco-friendly and socially responsible business practices” of the travel industry.

The GSTC have four main themes: “effective sustainability planning; maximizing social and economic benefits for the local community; enhancing cultural heritage; and reducing negative impacts to the environment.”

Mayor Newsom as well as the mayors of Baltimore and Miami have already promised to apply the criteria in their respective cities.  Green Biz
