Valero Energy Corp., one of the largest petroleum refiners in the U.S. is installing 33 windmills to supply electricity to its gasoline and diesel refinery in Sunray, TX according to the Wall St. Journal .
The 70-year old refinery is located 40 miles north of Amarillo in one of the best wind-power-producing regions in the U.S. Valero expects the wind farm, when fully constructed, to generate enough electricity to cover the refinery’s needs for 40% to 45% of the time.
The company, which will receive tax credits for the project, anticipates that the $115 million projected cost of the wind farm will pay for itself in about 10 years.
