Climate change bill and a snowy winter

During the same week that Senators Boxer and Kerry are unveiling their climate change legislation in the Senate, Bloomberg is reporting that reported that Matt Rogers, a forecaster at Commodity Weather Group, predicts that because of a weak El Nino (the Pacific Ocean warming current), the Northeast may have the coldest and snowiest winter in a decade. This will cause a greater demand for home-heating fuel resulting in greater costs for homeowners and businesses.

Climate change experts will quickly remind us that one cannot make assumptions about climate based on one year’s weather. Fair enough. But a cold, snowy and expensive winter in the Northeast will not help the Kerry-Boxer bill. At the very least, it’s the “optics,” as they say in the public relations world.
