Tom Keane, a Boston Globe columnist, wrote an opinion piece in the Globe’s Sunday magazine telling Cape Wind’s opponents “enough already.” Mr Keane admonishes the Cape Wind opponents for fighting against the offshore wind farm for almost a decade based on their so-called concerns birds, fish, Indian tribes and the environment. According Keane, the reason the opponents have been so tenacious is —and always has been — the views from their houses.

Kevin Costner is a Hollywood star who puts his money where is mouth is - $26 million to be precise. After the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, Kostner, his brother and scientist, Dan Kostner, and a group of investors and developers created a machine that cleans oil from seawater.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Green Fund, invests in clean tech, but it doesn’t look at the shiny, brand new start-ups; it’s looking at more “grown-up” clean tech.
The New York Times reports today:
“The founders and early investors of these clean-tech companies have already weathered the riskiest period - figuring out if the technology works - and are bringing in several millions of dollars in revenue. Now, the companies need capital to become $100 million companies, and experienced advisers to refine their business model or marketing strategy.”

This week has been a good week for Cape Wind.
On Wednesday, Ken Salazar, U. S. Secretary of the Interior, announced that the Interior Department has given its final approval of the Cape Wind project. At the same time, a Massachusetts Superior Court judge dismissed a lawsuit against Cape Wind brought by the Town of Barnstable and the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, among others, seeking to stop the off-shore wind farm.

UPS announced announced Monday that it was deploying 200 new hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to the streets of Austin, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Long Island, Minneapolis and Louisville. UPS already has 50 HEVs on the road in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix.
The new trucks will feature the same body and will appear identical to the iconic brown truck on the roads today, except for additional labeling identifying the truck as hybrids.

For the month of April, Walmart is highlighting Terracycle’s products made from waste packaging and other trash. Walmart will display 60 Terracycle products next to the original products they were made from as part of Walmart’s “Earth Month” campaign, according to Greenbiz .

The Environmental Protection Agency confirmed Monday that it will not require power plants, refineries or other large carbon dioxide emitters to obtain permits before January 2011.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Lisa Jackson, the EPA administrator has delayed implementation of new regulations because she faced “strong pressure from state regulators, lawmakers and various industry groups.”

California’s independent budget watchdog, the Legislative Analyst’s Office, predicts job losses in California due to, among other things, the state’s climate change legislation, according to a report today in Reuters.
In 2006, California passed a climate change law that mandates greenhouse gas emissions cutbacks to 1990 levels by the year 2020.

The gold, silver and bronze medallions slung around winning athletes’ necks as they step on to the winners’ podium at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games could well be made from the guts of an old Belgian computer.
The manufacturer of medals for this Olympics is for the first time incorporating token amounts of recycled material into the medals. Medals historically have been made of freshly mines ores.
The innovation – though largely symbolic – was directed by an Olympic organising committee which had vowed to put on the greenest games ever, raising the bar for London in 2012.
